Specialization

Although I enjoy seeing all clients, and feel that I can help with most challenges, I primarily practice in several areas of specialization. They are as follows:

Couples/Relationship Therapy –
Some of my favorite and most challenging clients are couples, whether they are in their twenties and not yet married, or in their sixties and working at changing well-worn negative patterns - their problems and personalities are unique while the underlying issues are similar.

I enjoy helping couples identify the personal wounds that are being played out in their dynamic. I teach men what intimacy really is - and no it's not sex, but you will discover increased passion if you actively listen, empathize and validate your partner. I help couples improve communication skills, manage their emotional reactivity (which interferes with healthy communication), and negotiate healthy boundaries with each other.

When the couple comes to therapy, the patient is the relationship, and the three of us work together on behalf of that relationship. It is always gratifying when a couple finds themselves in a better place as a result of their work in therapy.

Reluctant teenagers, husbands and sons–
One of my strengths is an ability to normalize therapy and to help therapy resistant men feel comfortable. The trick is to get these wife mandated referrals to accept that therapy might improve their lives.  These men and teenagers are usually referred for anger management, anxiety and depression disorders or garden variety issues related to self-esteem and identity.

Addictions –
Alcohol and drug addiction recovery is an important part of my practice. I have a speciailization in the treatment of Sex Addicition and am on the staff of the Del Amo Hospital Sexual Recovery Program. Guiding clients into 12-step programs and other support groups, recommending psychiatric assistance if necessary, and working on the underlying issues that fuel the addictive behavior are important aspects of the therapeutic relationship with the recovering addict.

Anxiety and Depression -
Sooner or later most of us get depressed. It is treatable and my clients know they will feel better soon if they can muster the resources to take care of themselves. It is rewarding to see people rise out of it and move on with their lives. Anxiety covers a large category of diagnoses and issues from Panic Disorder and PTSD to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and various phobias, along with general anxiety. I have treated them all successfuly and enjoy this work especially because it leads to developmental growth and greater contentment in life. I utilize Neurofeedback at times to assist with this work.
